It wasn't a tough decision to keep the existing structure as it was when it came to giving new life to the Joshi residence. As sustainability is at the core of all our projects, we decided on altering and fine-tuning the existing structure instead of completely demolishing it and starting from scratch. This decision made us look at the space more creatively, leading to designing ample elements that compliment the existing structure while making it look fresh and new.

A key design element that features in the Joshi House is a structure that mimics the function of a solar chimney. Ventilators embedded at the tops of walls and doors bring out the warm air from the spaces and the open wall with window slits on the side of the house helps heat that air up, pushing the warm air up and out of the house, keeping the space cool. The rat trap bonds in the exterior walls of the house also help with the cooling. This natural cooling mechanism employed all throughout the house has reduced our client's dependency on mechanical cooling.
Other elements such as a light wooden and steel staircase ensures the free flow of air through the gaps. The living room and the kitchen open out into a patio which then leads into the backyard where our client can have small gatherings and events.
