NFBM Jagriti School for Blind Girls,
Alandi
This is a school for blind girls who live below the poverty line in the Alandi area of Maharashtra. The girls are given a basic education along with many vocational and life skills that will help them live independently. The school construction and activities all run on sponsorships, thus the construction was nothing short of challenging.

Constructed on three levels, with each level markings etched in the walls, this school is a safe haven for the girls. The rat trap bonds, ferrocementing, filler slabs were used to achieve an economical and an environment-friendly construction. Both the main institute and the dormitories have the signature courtyard planning. Alandi being a dry zone, the building is built in a way that it casts its shadow upon itself and cools down.
The brick jaalis instead of traditional glass windows and buffer zones also ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the girls. Since these girls depend on sensing light, it was mandatory to have as much natural right penetrating deep inside the institute and the dormitory as well. Light shelves were built enhancing light quality and ensuring that the girls get to have a comfortable experience at the school. Everything was built with a conscious mindset that would make the space foster growth and learning.
